Alcohol consumption on the University of Ottawa campus
Since November 1st 2004, the University of Ottawa, in conjunction with Chartwells, holds an Alcohol License for the SITE Hall and the University Center. The licensed areas of these buildings are recognized under a regular Liquor Sales License.
To comply with the regulations of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO), strict procedures for bar services in locations other than SITE Hall and the University Center, have had to be maintained. Because notices have to be given to the fire, police and community-health services when alcohol consumption is involved, clients are asked to submit their request for bar services 15 days before their event.
Requests for bar services must be done through Conventions and Reservations.
University policies and AGCO regulations prohibit anyone from obtaining alcohol independently and serving or consuming it on campus. Bar services must be provided by the University’s authorized food supplier, Chartwells.
Events must take place in or on the premises designated for this purpose which are recognized by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
Furthermore, the University of Ottawa considers it extremely important for on-campus building managers and for all users of bar services, to fully understand their responsibilities arising from events where alcoholic beverages are consumed. Protection Services sometimes signals that individuals are not complying with regulations established by the University of Ottawa.
As co-holder of alcohol permits, the University of Ottawa could be held liable for off-campus accidents involving individuals who consumed too much alcohol while on University property.
